Skip hire in Scarborough, sorted tomorrow

Yes if the skip sits on a public road or highway. No if it's on your own driveway or private land.

North Yorkshire Council issues skip licences for two weeks at a time, currently around £90. An early start fee applies if you need it within 3 days, and a further licence fee applies if the skip stays beyond two weeks. Skips aren't normally allowed on pavements or verges, or on the road where they could reasonably go on private property, and a full skip must be removed within two days.

It depends on the volume and weight of your waste. Skip sizes run from 2 to 40 cubic yards (roughly 1.5 to 30 m³). A quick guide in bin bags:

For heavy waste like soil, concrete or rubble, choose a size that accounts for weight limits. A smaller skip filled with hardcore can hit its maximum tonnage well before it's physically full. Skip hire prices vary by size and waste type. As a guide for the Scarborough area:

• 2 to 4 yard mini and midi skips: £80 to £165
• 6 to 8 yard builders skips: £165 to £240
• 10 to 14 yard maxi skips: £240 to £420+
• 20 to 40 yard roll-on roll-off: £600 to £1,200

Some providers quote plus VAT, so always compare the total. Our quotes include delivery, collection and any permit fee. Placing the skip on your driveway avoids the permit fee entirely. Heavy waste such as concrete or soil may carry weight-based charges, which we tell you about up front.

Asbestos, tyres, fridges and freezers, batteries, fluorescent tubes, gas cylinders, hazardous chemicals, solvents, paints, electrical appliances and liquids of any kind. Next-day delivery is standard across the Scarborough area. Same-day skip hire is often possible for driveway placements booked before midday. The main thing that adds time is a public road placement, which needs a council permit and up to 3 working days.

Standard hire is 7 to 14 days, long enough for most domestic and building projects. Longer hire, skip exchanges (a fresh skip when the first is full) and wait-and-load collections are available on request. Note that skips on a public road are limited to two weeks per council licence and a full skip must be removed within two days.

A standard skip lorry needs roughly 3 m of clear width and 4 m of overhead clearance, with no low branches or overhead cables on the approach. The skip is placed on firm, level ground; soft lawns and steep drives can be a problem. We'll always check access with you before delivery, and if a skip won't fit, a skip bag or wait-and-load service usually will.

For a few bags, the household waste recycling centre or a man-and-van rubbish removal service can be cheaper. For a renovation, house clearance or garden project, a skip usually works out cheaper per cubic yard and you can fill it over several days rather than in one go.
