Hiring a skip should be simple: pick a size, we deliver it, you fill it, we collect it. Across the UK waste industry it often isn't, with unclear pricing, slow permits and confusion over what you can throw away. We remove every one of those pain points for Scarborough homes and businesses.

Next-day delivery as standard

Fast turnaround on most orders across YO11 to YO14. Same-day delivery is often possible for driveway drops booked before midday.

Skip sizes and prices in Scarborough

Every waste disposal project is different. A kitchen renovation produces different rubbish from a garden landscaping job or an office strip-out. Pick the tab that matches your project. Prices are a guide for the Scarborough area and depend on size, waste type and whether a permit is needed.

Domestic skip hire for homeowners tackling garden clearance, loft conversions, house moves or a general declutter. Mini and midi skips are ideal for small domestic clearouts where you don't want to pay for capacity you won't use.

Specialist waste disposal options

Not every project fits a standard skip. Some waste types need separating and some sites have access constraints that make traditional skip placement impossible.

Segregated skips

Separate skips for soil, concrete, green waste or mixed recyclables. Keeps recycling rates high and disposal costs down.

Lockable skips

Secure lids for commercial premises or any site where unauthorised dumping is a concern.

Wait and load

We wait while you load, then take it away. Ideal where a skip can't be left on the road or you need it gone the same day.

Skip bags

Flexible 1 to 1.5 tonne bag alternatives for restricted-access areas where a standard skip won't fit. Best suited to lighter waste.

Longer hire and exchanges

Need the skip past 14 days, or a fresh one when the first is full? Extensions and skip swap-overs arranged on request.

Grab hire and man and van

For loose soil, hardcore or small loads where a skip is overkill, we can point you to a better-value option.

How hiring a skip works in Scarborough

From booking to collection, here's exactly what happens when you hire a skip with us.

Choose a size, get a quote

Tell us what you're throwing away, roughly how much there is, and whether the skip goes on your driveway or the road. Smaller skips cost less, so accurate sizing saves money.

If your waste is mostly heavy (rubble, soil, hardcore) we may recommend a smaller skip to stay within safe weight limits. Your quote comes back within 1 working day, fully broken down.

Delivery and placement

Next-day delivery is standard. Same-day is often possible for driveway placements booked before midday.

On a driveway or private land, no permit is needed and we simply deliver and place it. On a public road, a council permit is required, which we arrange. Allow up to 3 working days. Our drivers place the skip safely with reflective markings, cones and lights as the permit requires.

Collection and recycling

Standard hire is 7 to 14 days. When you're done, contact us and we'll collect, usually within 24 hours. Keep the load level with the top of the skip; overfilled skips can't be transported safely.

Your waste goes to a licensed processing facility where it's sorted for recycling. We achieve recycling rates of up to 85% and can supply waste transfer notes on request.

Driveway or road? It's worth about £90

North Yorkshire Council issues skip permits for two weeks at a time, currently around £90, with an early start fee if it's needed within 3 days and a further fee if the skip stays longer (see the council's highways fees and charges). Skips won't normally be approved on a pavement or verge, or on the road if there's room on private property. Only registered skip operators can apply, so we do it for you. If the skip can go on your drive, you avoid the fee entirely. Full detail in our skip permit guide.

What can and can't go in a skip

Most household, garden and building waste is fine. A handful of items are restricted by law and need a specialist disposal route, which we can advise on.

Yes, in the skip

  • General household waste and furniture
  • Garden waste, soil, turf and green waste
  • Rubble, bricks, concrete and hardcore (weight limits apply)
  • Wood, timber, doors and flooring
  • Metal, plastics, packaging and cardboard
  • Kitchen and bathroom fittings, tiles
  • Plasterboard, bagged separately
  • Mattresses and carpets (ask first, small surcharge may apply)

No, needs specialist disposal

  • Asbestos
  • Fridges, freezers and other large white goods
  • Tyres
  • Batteries and fluorescent tubes
  • Gas cylinders and pressurised containers
  • Hazardous chemicals, solvents and paints
  • Electrical appliances and TVs
  • Liquids of any kind

Mixing prohibited materials into a standard skip can result in additional charges and legal liability. Fill the skip level with the top: overfilled skips cannot be collected. The reasons behind each item are in what can and can't go in a skip, and why.

Skip hire FAQs

Straight answers on permits, sizes, costs and what you can throw away.

Do I need a skip permit in Scarborough?

Yes if the skip sits on a public road or highway. No if it's on your own driveway or private land.

North Yorkshire Council issues skip licences for two weeks at a time, currently around £90. An early start fee applies if you need it within 3 days, and a further licence fee applies if the skip stays beyond two weeks. Skips aren't normally allowed on pavements or verges, or on the road where they could reasonably go on private property, and a full skip must be removed within two days.

Only registered skip operators can apply, so we arrange the whole thing on your behalf and include the fee in your quote. Allow 3 working days for approval. The general rules are also on GOV.UK. There's a fuller walkthrough in our post on skip permits in Scarborough.

What skip size do I need for my project?

It depends on the volume and weight of your waste. Skip sizes run from 2 to 40 cubic yards (roughly 1.5 to 30 m³). A quick guide in bin bags:

Skip sizeCapacityBest for
2 to 4 yard mini/midi15 to 40 bagsRoom clearouts, garden tidying
6 yard50 to 60 bagsMedium renovations, garage clear-outs
8 yard builders60 to 80 bagsLarge home projects, builders' waste
10 to 14 yard maxi80 to 140 bagsMajor renovations, site clearances
20 to 40 yard RORO200 to 450 bagsDemolition, industrial projects

For heavy waste like soil, concrete or rubble, choose a size that accounts for weight limits. A smaller skip filled with hardcore can hit its maximum tonnage well before it's physically full. If you're doing a bathroom or kitchen, our post on choosing a skip size for a bathroom or kitchen goes room by room.

How much does skip hire cost in Scarborough?

Skip hire prices vary by size and waste type. As a guide for the Scarborough area:

  • 2 to 4 yard mini and midi skips: £80 to £165
  • 6 to 8 yard builders skips: £165 to £240
  • 10 to 14 yard maxi skips: £240 to £420+
  • 20 to 40 yard roll-on roll-off: £600 to £1,200

Some providers quote plus VAT, so always compare the total. Our quotes include delivery, collection and any permit fee. Placing the skip on your driveway avoids the permit fee entirely. Heavy waste such as concrete or soil may carry weight-based charges, which we tell you about up front.

What can't go in a skip?

Asbestos, tyres, fridges and freezers, batteries, fluorescent tubes, gas cylinders, hazardous chemicals, solvents, paints, electrical appliances and liquids of any kind. Plasterboard is accepted but must be bagged separately. See the full list in what can and can't go in a skip, or read the longer version with the reasons why. If you need to dispose of a restricted item we can advise on specialist routes.

How quickly can you deliver a skip?

Next-day delivery is standard across the Scarborough area. Same-day skip hire is often possible for driveway placements booked before midday. The main thing that adds time is a public road placement, which needs a council permit and up to 3 working days.

How long can I keep the skip, and can I extend?

Standard hire is 7 to 14 days, long enough for most domestic and building projects. Longer hire, skip exchanges (a fresh skip when the first is full) and wait-and-load collections are available on request. Note that skips on a public road are limited to two weeks per council licence and a full skip must be removed within two days.

What access does the lorry need?

A standard skip lorry needs roughly 3 m of clear width and 4 m of overhead clearance, with no low branches or overhead cables on the approach. The skip is placed on firm, level ground; soft lawns and steep drives can be a problem. We'll always check access with you before delivery, and if a skip won't fit, a skip bag or wait-and-load service usually will.

Is skip hire cheaper than a man and van or the tip?

For a few bags, the household waste recycling centre or a man-and-van rubbish removal service can be cheaper. For a renovation, house clearance or garden project, a skip usually works out cheaper per cubic yard and you can fill it over several days rather than in one go. For loose soil or hardcore, grab hire is sometimes better value. Tell us the job and we'll say honestly which option fits.
